Job Summary
As a Co-Responder with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO), the Mental Health Professional will work directly with a JSO law enforcement partner to provide crisis de-escalation, intervention, assessment, and linkage to appropriate services to ensure the disposition of mental health calls and crisis responses are to the least restrictive community-based services.
Responsibilities
- Assist law enforcement whenever they come into contact with an individual suspected of having a mental illness or substance abuse disorder.
- Provide short-term interventions to reduce symptoms and stabilize the immediate situation.
- Assess individual risk for danger to self, danger to others, and other safety-related concerns and responds accordingly.
- Develop a safety plan in the least restrictive setting.
- Develop a collaborative crisis plan that meets the needs of the individual and law enforcement.
- Assess and monitor for symptoms of trauma and indications of abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment. Use appropriate reporting mechanisms.
- Offer effective interventions to assist in coordinating services.
- Interviews natural supports to gather relevant information and provide information as needed.
- Prevent unnecessary hospitalizations or Emergency Department (ED) use of individuals with mental illness or substance abuse.
- Determine when to involve medical personnel when medical safety is identified as an issue.
- Assist with linkage to appropriate mental health, substance abuse, and medical providers as appropriate.
- Work closely with law enforcement and crisis intervention personnel to problem-solve complex situations and develop plans for immediate and appropriate interventions.
- Collaborate with other community agencies to address immediate individual needs.
- Encourage the establishment and maintenance of support systems.
- Collaborate with other providers to access needed services.
- Conduct follow-up visits with high-risk individuals.
- Refer to and coordinate necessary psychiatric evaluation and medication management to ensure access to stabilization services.
Qualifications
- In order to be considered, candidates must have a Master’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, or a related Human Services field from an accredited university or college (a related Human Services field is defined as one in which 30 hours of coursework includes the study of human behavior and development) and experience working with persons with severe and persistent mental illness required.
- Two years of experience in crisis response is required.
- Valid Florida Registered Intern (IMH, ISW, or IMT) preferred.
- Valid Florida License (LMHC, LCSW, or LMFT) preferred.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in the MHRC Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Patient Information System demonstrated within three months of employment.
- Strong communication skills are essential and this individual must be able to interact appropriately with internal and external customers, including patients, families, caregivers, community service providers, supervisory staff, and other department professionals.

Mental Health Resource Center, Inc. (MHRC) is a nonprofit organization that provides a wide range of behavioral health and social services to the community. Included in MHRC’s service array are 24-hour emergency services and inpatient psychiatric services for children, adolescents, and adults. Outpatient services include medication management, care coordination, case management, intensive case management team services, counseling, psychosocial rehabilitation, an adult therapeutic family program, state hospital liaison services, mental health court, multidisciplinary forensic teams (MFT), jail-based diversion services, a Co-Responder Program with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the Link-to-Life suicide prevention program, and services that assist individuals in obtaining benefits such as Social Security Income, Social Security Disability Income, Medicaid, food stamps, and housing. In addition, UF Health Jacksonville contracts with MHRC to manage the hospital’s adult inpatient psychiatric unit.
MHRC also operates eight Florida Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) programs for adults with severe and persistent mental illness, located in Clearwater, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Kissimmee, Rockledge, Tampa, and Winter Haven, as well as a FACT Lite program providing Linking, Advocating, Treating, Transitioning, Empowering & Recovery Support (LATTERS) services in Jacksonville. The two FACT teams located in Jacksonville serve residents of Duval, Clay, and Nassau counties.
