Job Summary
Mental Health Resource Center, a comprehensive not-for-profit mental health and social services provider and Joint Commission accredited organization, is currently seeking an Inpatient Counselor for the Adult Unit (CSU) at our Northside facility.
The Inpatient Counselor conducts initial and on-going assessments of patients on the Adult Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) to ensure the provision of individualized treatment and services. The Inpatient Counselor provides individual, group and family therapy sessions on functional, social, personal, and educational topics and performs trauma and additional assessments as recommended by the Psychiatrist or APRN.
Responsibilities
- Provides individual, group, and family therapy sessions to CSU patients and families.
- Provides individual and group training on functional, social, personal and psycho-educational skills to patients.
- Completes patient documentation in a timely, accurate manner:
- Completes bio-psychosocial assessments.
- Develops and updates treatment plan and treatment plan reviews.
- Documents progress towards fulfillment of treatment plan goals and objectives.
- Documents all services provided in patient medical record.
- Documents all contact with patient, family/significant others and other service providers in the medical record.
- Gathers and documents collateral data.
- Attends and participates in daily rounds and treatment team; communicates patient progress/concerns; reports on the content of Family Therapy sessions.
- Assesses and monitors for risk, symptoms of trauma, and indications of abuse, neglect and/or abandonment. Uses appropriate reporting mechanisms.
- Completes initial and ongoing assessments of the patient and his/her post discharge environment.
- Contacts individual’s designated representative by telephone as authorized. Obtains information regarding individual, family and caregiver functioning. Maintains a liaison with them throughout the admission.
- Participates in treatment planning with patients, families or caregivers for further interventions aimed at identifying/resolving problems.
- Initiates and follows up on requests for the individual’s record for any previous psychiatric or medical treatment.
- Coordinates financial information with financial clerk.
- Serves as a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Treatment Team in order to develop the Treatment Plan/Discharge Plan and assist the patient in achieving desired goals.
- Develops resources that are individualized and appropriate to support successful functioning in community/targeted environment.
Qualifications
- In order to be considered, candidates must have a Master’s degree in Social Work or a related Human Services field from an accredited university or college (a related Human Services field is defined as one in which 30 hours of course work includes the study of human behavior and development) and Valid Florida State Registered Intern (IMH, ISW or IMT) required within 90 days.
- Previous mental health experience with adult population preferred.
- Valid Florida License (LMHC,LCSW or LMFT) preferred.
- Certification in CFARS preferred.
- Inpatient Counselor candidates are required to make sound decisions independently on a daily basis, including but not limited to recognizing risks and emergencies and responding appropriately. In addition, the ideal candidate will enjoy a fast paced environment and knowing that what they do positively impacts the community.
- Inpatient Counselors must be able to interact appropriately with internal and external customers, including patients, families, community service providers, supervisory staff and other department professionals. This position requires individual and group interaction with patients on a locked unit.

Mental Health Resource Center, Inc. (MHRC) is a nonprofit organization that provides a wide range of behavioral health and social services to the community. Included in MHRC’s service array are 24-hour emergency services and inpatient psychiatric services for children, adolescents, and adults. Outpatient services include medication management, care coordination, case management, intensive case management team services, counseling, psychosocial rehabilitation, an adult therapeutic family program, state hospital liaison services, mental health court, multidisciplinary forensic teams (MFT), jail-based diversion services, a Co-Responder Program with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the Link-to-Life suicide prevention program, and services that assist individuals in obtaining benefits such as Social Security Income, Social Security Disability Income, Medicaid, food stamps, and housing. In addition, UF Health Jacksonville contracts with MHRC to manage the hospital’s adult inpatient psychiatric unit.
MHRC also operates eight Florida Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) programs for adults with severe and persistent mental illness, located in Clearwater, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Kissimmee, Rockledge, Tampa, and Winter Haven, as well as a FACT Lite program providing Linking, Advocating, Treating, Transitioning, Empowering & Recovery Support (LATTERS) services in Jacksonville. The two FACT teams located in Jacksonville serve residents of Duval, Clay, and Nassau counties.
